A Novel Concept in Charitable Fundraising

Q. Many would like to contribute to favorite and worthwhile charities but people seem to have less time and money. Is this true?

A: Yes. Today's world is literally jam-packed, downsized and stressed out.  This means more traffic, more commuting, and less discretionary time to volunteer.  National averages show that out of every single dollar, (including net worth) only 7 ¢ is spendable cash. Today personal portfolios are low in cash and cash instruments.  The typical breakdown is the following:

Cash 7%
Bonds 11%
Real Estate 24%
Personal Property 20%
Corporate Stock 36%

NOTE:   Although many would like to support their favorite non-profits in a meaningful, material way, the demands of living seem to overshadow the desire for giving, and this even applies to the so-called wealthy or high net worth citizens (over $3 million).

Q. Is there an answer for the 21st" Century Charitable Institutions to thrive and survive?

A:  Yes.  Congress will not do away with the tax exempt status of charitable 501(c) 3, organizations. Because they certainly cannot afford to fund them, Congress will probably not touch this sacred cow.

Q. What are some innovative charities doing?

A: Charitable Foundations: MAP Foundation, Inc. (a 501-c-3 organization) is the silent partner for many trucking companies, city governments, sherriff departments, and corporations to honor their employees, drivers, owner operators, police officers, and fire fighters with scholarships. To date 50 scholarships have been awarded. The funds are derived from overrides paid by Pre-paid Legal Services, Inc. and several other premier insurance carriers. 100% of all donations go directly to Scholarships of the designated company or organization.

Q. How could we install MAP Scholarship Program in our company?

    A:
  • Participating companies (or organizations) who offer the appropriate Pre-paid Legal Services, Inc. memberships to their employees, commercial drivers, nurses with the group discounts will be eligible to offer on-going scholarships to the families of their employment. Each year the overrides are calculated by the enrollment computer records.
  • The company selects a Selection Committee to review the applications and determine the student selected to receive scholarships.
  • The company rewards, recruits, and retains loyal valuable employees without incurring costs for the scholarships.

Q. How does it work?

A: Simple, it’s based upon the ancient Pareto Principle: (80:20 Rule). 80% of the funds are raised in the traditional manner: Benefactors, Donors, & Functions of a typical charity are observed. The remaining 20% of the funds come from Prepaid Legal Services, Inc. overrides passively paid to the MAP International Foundation, Inc. from memberships sold (Family plan, Commercial Driver plan, Personal Identity Theft Protection plan, Nurses Plan, Ministers Plan, Law Enforcement Officers Plan, etc.) Our volunteers are trained, certified, and in many states have an insurance license. They:

  • present the appropriate plan to group employee orientation meetings,
  • sign the employees, drivers, owner operators, etc. to the appropriate membership.
  • turn in payroll deduction to the human resource dept.
  • receive a computer print out and commissions.
  • MAP tracks the passive overrides to the company for their Scholarship fund.

Q. Who organized and manages the scholarship funds?

A: The first woman Accredited Estate Planner in America created it; Lana Sue McCormick has more than a quarter of a century:

  • in the insurance business (CLU AEP)
  • and has extensive experience serving on boards
  • and fund raisers for non-profit organizations.
Today she serves as the Coordinator of the Associates and teaches other companies how to install a MAP Scholarship Plan for their employees’ families. “I report to the Board of Directors, and our goal is to Educate America by helping our scholarship winners MAP their destiny. My grandmother Bullock helped to organize the Goodwill Industries in North Texas. One of her favorite proverbs was (in her paraphrase) Remember, God can move mountains, but he wants us to bring a shovel!”

Q. How can my company (or trucking company or organization) benefit from MAP Scholarships?

A: Simply by letting our MAP Prepaid Legal Associates teach and enroll your employees in the valuable memberships to protect their livelihoods, personal identity, families, home-based business, etc.

Q. Who are the enrollers?

A: We have a team to begin initially and need you ideas of people in you area you would like to serve you with this wonderful service. We will work with them in the qualifying system. Samples of our associates who enroll employees and truck drivers at weekly orientation programs are:

  • Joplin MO, a former school teacher married to a trainer of the carrier
  • Kennesaw GA, an insurance agent who marketed P&C insurance
  • Texarkana AR, a supplemental insurance person the company liked to use
  • DFW area and OK, another supplemental insurance person
  • Texarkana TX, a new business manager at a bank who was ready to retire & travel

Q. Who has received the MAP Scholarships?

A: To date, 21 scholarships have been awarded to children of truck drivers, owner operators, employees and 2 have been given to their spouses. One spouse is finishing her degree in nursing, one son is studying to be a plumbing engineer, & several are studying to teach school. We want to help them: MAP Your Destiny. Several of our companies have set up their own Scholarship committees or have added MAP Scholarships to their on-going scholarship programs.

Q. What is the next step?

A: Fill out the Gold card with the proper contact information for your company, the best time to contact you, and return it to:

  • MAP International Foundation, Inc.
  • 3411 Summerhill Road
  • Texarkana, TX 75503.
